Monday · 8 February
We begin the week the way our families always have — a small puja in the courtyard, then the haldi: turmeric, sandalwood and rosewater, ground the night before by Nani, pressed onto the bride and groom by anyone who can reach them.
Tuesday · 9 February
The garden fills with henna cones, a dholak, and far too much chai. Aanya's hands will take the better part of four hours — plenty of time for the rest of us to queue, argue about whose design is best, and wait for it to dry.
Wednesday · 10 February
Both families have been rehearsing in secret since October, and both are convinced they will win. There will be a dhol, a dance floor by the water, and a slideshow Vihaan has been assured contains no photographs from 2011.
Thursday · 11 February
Vihaan arrives with the band in full cry and his cousins blocking traffic. Garlands are exchanged under the mandap, then the seven pheras around the sacred fire — seven promises, spoken quietly, while everyone we love leans in to hear.
Friday · 12 February
A handful of rice thrown over her shoulder, a car covered in marigolds, and a send-off nobody manages to get through dry-eyed. That evening we gather one last time — dinner, a first dance, and the band playing until the city goes quiet.
